What’s the difference between CNC-cut and diamond-cut wheels?
CNC cutting is the machining process, and diamond cutting is the crisp, high-shine finish you see on many modern alloy wheels.
When people talk about diamond-cut wheels, they mean the striking two-tone style: clean, bright machined alloy finish with painted, tinted or powder-coated sections for contrast.
We create this look using a wheel-specific CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathe fitted with a diamond-tipped cutting tool.
The wheel is rotated at high speed by the lathe, and the cutting tip moves across the surface very precisely following the programming to remove a very thin layer from the wheel face, exposing fresh alloy and producing a sharp, reflective, mirror-like finish.
At Alloy Wheel Repair, our CNC lathe is computer-guided — each wheel is digitally mapped, mounted, and cut with micron-level precision.
This ensures a perfectly consistent finish across all four wheels. You just can’t match that with hand polishing or mobile repair methods, where an angle grinder is used.
CNC diamond cutting is often part of our full-service wheel restoration. If you book us for Mag Wheel Repair, Curbed or Scuffed Wheel Repair, or Powder Coating, CNC machining may be included when your wheel face needs a factory-fresh cut and shine.
Note: Diamond cutting for alloy wheels has nothing to do with cutting actual gemstones — we use a diamond-tipped tool on metal, no engagement rings here!
When we can help with CNC and diamond cutting
If your wheels have a polished face, two-tone finish, or directional machining lines, they may be diamond cut. We can restore or refinish wheels for:
-
- BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and other European brands
- Tesla, Lexus, and late-model performance vehicles
- Factory diamond-cut wheels with curb rash or oxidation
- Two-tone wheels needing clean edge separation
- Custom builds with CNC-milled faces
Not sure if your wheels are suitable for diamond cutting? Just send us a photo or bring the vehicle by, and we’ll provide some options.

Our diamond cutting process
Our process
1. Inspect and prep
We assess the wheel to confirm it’s suitable for diamond cutting. Some wheels may only allow for one or two cuts in their lifetime due to material thickness and the design of the machined wheel face.
2. Strip and pre-clean
We remove the tyre, weights and valve, before cleaning the wheel to remove contaminants. If the wheel has previous paint or powder coat, we may need to chemically strip or sandblast it – see our Chemical Stripping service.
3. CNC lathe setup and machining
The wheel is mounted to our CNC lathe and digitally mapped. The robotic arm spins and guides the diamond-tipped cutting tool across the face with exacting speed and depth.
4. Protective finish
After machining, the bare alloy is treated with an anti-corrosion agent prior to being sealed with a clear coat (powder coated in most cases) or tinted lacquer to protect against oxidation and enhance contrast.
5. Final check and rebalance
Once cured, we refit the tyre, rebalance the wheel, and inspect the result to ensure a uniform finish and road-ready condition.

“What a fantastic job these guys did for me. All 4 of my wheels needed a full overhaul. Brilliant work. Friendly and helpful staff and the process was very easy. Given the amount of work done to my wheels I found the price very affordable. I would highly recommend their services.”
