Here’s what’s happening with tyre disposal in New Zealand and what that means for you.
Old tyres have been a massive problem in NZ
Kiwis go through about 6.5 million tyres every year. Until recently, only about 40% of these tyres were being recycled or repurposed.
The rest? Well, they’ve been ending up in places they shouldn’t – stockpiled, dumped illegally, or taking up space in landfills.
As well as being an eyesore, tyres that aren’t disposed of properly can:
- Release toxic chemicals into our soil and waterways
- Create fire hazards (one burning tyre produces about 7.5L of oil!)
- Take up valuable landfill space
- Become breeding grounds for mosquitoes
But here’s the good news – New Zealand’s stepping up its game…
Tyrewise is fixing the tyre recycling problem
Since March 2024, Tyrewise has been changing how we handle end-of-life tyres. Tyrewise is New Zealand’s regulated program that ensures old tyres get properly recycled instead of ending up in landfills or stockpiles.
As an official Tyrewise partner, the team at Alloy Wheel Repair is excited to be part of this solution. This is a more sustainable and convenient way to dispose of old tyres involving:
✔️ No additional fees: The disposal cost is included when you buy new tyres (there’s a fee if you’re just disposing, but that’s not much different from previous costs)
✔️ Full transparency: Every tyre gets properly handled through registered partners
✔️ Supporting local: Contributing to New Zealand’s circular economy by partnering with local recycling facilities and supporting domestic solutions
✔️ Caring for the land: By our certified disposal services, you’re helping protect New Zealand’s unique environment for future generations
What will happen to my old tyres?
Your disposed old tyres will be transformed into all sorts of useful things:
- Athletic tracks: That springy surface at your local sports field? Could be your old tyres!
- Road construction: Making our roads more durable
- Playground surfaces: Keeping kids safe while they play
- Cement production: At Golden Bay Cement, recycled tyres are helping reduce coal use by up to 15%
New regulations and tyre disposal fees
The March 2024 regulations have introduced a new structured approach to tyre costs and disposal. Here’s what you need to know:
The Tyrewise fee
- A regulated stewardship fee is now charged on all new tyres at import
- This fee is passed through to consumers in the price of new tyres
- All tyre retailers must include this fee in their displayed prices
- No separate disposal fees can be charged when buying new tyres
Tyre disposal fees when you’re buying new tyres from our Tyre Shop
- The Tyrewise fee is already included in your purchase price
- Disposal of your old tyres is included at no extra charge
- No hidden or additional disposal fees can be added
Tyre disposal fees when you’re just getting rid of old tyres (not buying new ones)
- Standard disposal rates apply
- Contact us for current pricing
- Bulk disposal rates are available for multiple tyres
- Commercial rates for fleet services
As your Auckland wheel repair specialists, we ensure every tyre is handled responsibly through the official Tyrewise network, giving you peace of mind about your environmental impact while maintaining our high service standards.

“Excellent job repairing some wheel rash on a 2025 Tesla Model 3. Ashley responded quite promptly to my queries, and over-delivered instead of over-promising, finishing the job on the same day. The quoted price was exactly what I was charged. The finish is perfect, and I cannot tell the difference between the factory wheels and the repaired wheels, no evidence of any seam/welding, and the finish/colour looks identical. Hopefully I don’t need his services again, but if I do, that’s where I will be heading.” Leon B ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
